Ska music has a long history. Newer followers of this style may
only be familiar with groups like The Mighty Mighty Bosstones,
or Sublime, but what about The Skatalites?
Ska evolved in the early 1960's in Jamaica as a combination of
R&B, calypso, and African rhythms. Artists like The Skatalites,
Desmond Dekker, and Prince Buster helped forge a new sound in
the island nation. This period is now known as "the first wave".
In the late sixties the up tempo sounds of ska slowed and developed
in Reggae.
In the late 1970's and early 1980's the ska sound got a new lease
on life, and a new ingredient was added to the mix, punk. Both
upbeat styles in nature, the combination of punk attitude and
the fast offbeat rhythms of ska, brought groups like The Specials,
Madness, and the English Beat to the public eye. And you guessed
it, this was "The second wave".
The Latest wave (The 3rd if you have been counting) has been
fueled again by the combination of punk and ska. Groups like The
Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Reel Big Fish, Sublime, Less than Jake,
Rancid, and No Doubt have brought a sound that is 40 years old
to the ears of a new generation.
